1. ABOUT SHANGHAI UNIVERSITY
Shanghai University (SHU) is a member University of Project 211 and a leading comprehensive university co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipality. It is among Shanghai’s first pilot programs of high-level construction of local university. As a university with first-class discipline construction qualified by the Ministry of Education, SHU reaches 271st among global universities rankings in ARWU 2023, 421st in US News 2023 and 97th in THE Higher Education World University Influence Rankings 2023.
SHU offers a wide range of disciplines, covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, natural science, engineering, medical science, management, art, multi-discipline, etc.
There are more than 40,000 full-time students in Shanghai University, including 2,730 international students from more than 150 countries. Modern campuses with well-equipped dormitory and sports facilities, and easy accessibility with subway nearby provide a pleasant environment for students of different languages and cultures to study here.
2. BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE SHCOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Chinese Government Scholarship Bilateral program accords with the cooperation and exchange agreements or consensus reached by the Chinese government and the governments and institutions of other nations. This scholarship program referred to as CSC-type A.
Ø Application accepting institution: Apply to the dispatching authorities for overseas study of your home country, such as educational department, Chinese embassy.
Ø Application time: Generally, from November 2023 to April 2024. Please consult the dispatching authorities for the specific deadline of each year.
Ø Applicant: Outstanding international students applying for undergraduates, postgraduates, general and senior scholars’ programs in Shanghai University.
Ø Majors under this scholarship program: No Limit (For the major list, please refer to https://apply.shu.edu.cn/ )
² This scholarship is not available for English taught bachelor program.
3. SCHOLARSHIP COVERAGE
Chinese Government Scholarship Bilateral program provides both full scholarships and partial scholarships. For more detailed information, please refer to https://www.campuschina.org
3.1 Full Scholarship
Ø Tuition fees in the standard length of schooling
Ø Free university dormitory or accommodation subsidy (CNY 700/month for undergraduates,master’s students and general scholars; CNY 1,000/month for doctoral students and senior scholars)
Ø Stipend:
Undergraduates: CNY 2,500 per month;
Master’s students/general scholars: CNY 3,000 per month;
Doctoral students/senior scholars: CNY 3,500 per month.
Ø Comprehensive medical insurance: CNY 800 per person per year; CNY 400 per person (for programs lasting less than six months)
3.2 Partial Scholarship
For more detailed information about partial scholarship, please consult the dispatching authorities for overseas study of your home country, such as educational department, Chinese embassy.
Notes:
² Stipend is monthly paid by Shanghai University. Scholarship students who register before the 15th (15th included) of the registration month will receive full stipend; those who register after the 15th will receive half stipend. Graduates can get another half month stipend after the graduation day determined by the university. If scholarship students have left China for more than 15 days due to personal reasons during his/her study period (except public holidays), his/her stipend during that time will be suspended.

4.SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY
4.1 Basic Eligibility
Be a citizen of a country other than the PRC and in good health both mentally and physically.
4.2 Language Proficiency
4.2.1 For Chinese-taught programs,
Have passed the HSK (Level 3) when applying for a Chinese-taught undergraduate or general scholar program (excluding Chinese language majors);
Have passed the HSK (Level 3) when applying for a Chinese-taught senior scholar program;
Have passed the HSK (Level 4) when applying for a Chinese-taught postgraduate program;
² For applicants who do not meet the language proficiency requirements for admission to Shanghai University Chinese taught programs, will first take one-year Chinese foundation program. Only after passing the examination and meet the language proficiency requirements can be admitted to the degree/ non-degree program.
² The language proficiency requirements for admission to Shanghai University Chinese taught programs:
4.2.2 For English-taught programs:
IELTS (Type A) 6.5 or TOEFL IBT 90 or above received within the recent two years(TOEFL MyBestTM Score and TOEFL essentials accepted).
We also accept other internationally recognized English proficiency tests with scores of the same level and proof of certificates is needed.
² TOEFL or IELTS Exemptions
The following types of applicants are exempt from taking the TOEFL or IELTS:
ü Native speakers of English;
ü The previous degree is fully taught in English.
4.3 Academic and age requirement
4.3.1 For undergraduate program
ü Be an academically excellent holder of high school diploma, GPA 3.0 or above(Note: 4-Point GPA System);
ü For Science or Engineering programs, applicants are qualified in mathematics and physics in high school. For Economics or Management programs, applicants are qualified in mathematics in high school. For Arts programs, applicants are required to submit his/her portfolio.
ü Applicants should be under the age of 25.
4.3.2 For Master’s Programs
ü Be an academically excellent holder of a Bachelor’s degree;
Graduates who have not yet received their degree certificates at the time of application are required to provide a pre-graduation certificate issued by their school or college, indicating the expected graduation time.
ü Relevant undergraduate academic background is required, or have completed undergraduate-level courses relevant to intended graduate major, with GPA 2.5 or above(Note: 4-Point GPA System).
ü Students applying to art majors must have relative academic background and submit a portfolio. Students applying to some programs of Shanghai Film Academy should have science and engineering foundation and professional background that matching with the supervisor’s research area.
ü Applicants should be under the age of 35.
4.3.3 For PhD’s Programs
ü Be an academically excellent holder of a Master’s degree;
Graduates who have not yet received their degree certificates at the time of application are required to provide a pre-graduation certificate issued by their school or college, indicating the expected graduation time.
ü Relevant master’s degree background and academic achievements, with GPA 3.0 or above (Note: 4-Point GPA System).
ü Students applying to art majors must have relative academic background and submit a portfolio. Students applying to some programs of Shanghai Film Academy should have science and engineering foundation and professional background that matching with the supervisor’s research area.
ü Applicants should be under the age of 40.
4.3.4 For general scholar program
ü Be a holder of a high school diploma (or higher).
ü Under the age of 45 when applying for a general scholar program.
4.3.5 For senior scholar program
ü Be a master’s degree holder or an associate professor (or above).
ü Under the age of 50 when applying for a senior scholar program.
4.4 No other type of scholarship was granted at the time of application.
5. DOCUMENTATION
The following materials should be prepared with complete and clear electronic versions.
þ Information Page of Passport
A clear copy of your valid passport with your name, photo, birth date, place of birth, date of issue, date of expiry. Visa page is required for applicants who are not in their home country. An applicant shall submit a clear scanned copy of the information page of his/her passport that will not expire on or before March 1, 2025. Renew the passport if the requirement is not met.
þ ID photo
The passport-size photo (one-inch, 390*570) should be taken within the last six months, bareheaded, full-faced with blue-color background; the photo is required to submit as JPG image less than 100kb.
þ Selfie video
Applicants should submit a video including self-introduction and study plan in China. avi, mov, or mp4 less than 50 MB are accepted. The language of the video should be consistent with the language of the program you are applying for (English or Chinese).
þ Highest Degree Diploma and Graduation Certificate
Graduates who have not yet received their degree certificates at the time of application are required to provide a pre-graduation certificate issued by their school or college, indicating the expected graduation time.
þ Academic transcripts
Academic records of the highest degree program shall be provided. These transcripts shall be issued and sealed by the attending high school’s/university’s academic affairs office, graduate school, or student management department.
þ Language Proficiency Certificate within the validity period
If the official language proficiency is not available at the time of application, applicants may upload a screenshot of the results queried on the website. The original certificate must be provided at the time of new student registration.
þ Two Recommendation Letters with Signature (Only for graduate program and senior scholar program)
Two letters of recommendation (written only in Chinese or English) from professors or associate professors shall be submitted. These letters shall describe the applicant’s objectives of learning in China, comprehensive abilities, and evaluation of future growth etc.; The referee’s signature and contact information are necessary.
þ A study or research plan
A study and research plan written in Chinese or English (no less than 200 words/characters for undergraduates; no less than 500 words/characters for scholars; no less than 1000 words/characters for postgraduates). Please merge into one PDF file if there are multiple certificates.
þ Certificate of No Criminal Record
The applicant shall submit a valid certificate of Non-Criminal Record issued by the local public security authority, usually issued within 6 months prior to the submission date of the application.
þ Foreigner Physical Examination
* An applicant to study in China for more than six months shall submit a photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form.
* The form is designed by the Chinese quarantine authority and can be obtained from the dispatching authority. The physical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take a physical examination as the result is valid for only 6 months.
þ Academic Research Documents or artworks (Refer to Departmental standards)
* Published academic papers and patent certificates
* Applicant for the arts or design program shall provide his/her own works (such as videos and paintings)
Notes:
Ø Documents not in Chinese or English should be accompanied by Chinese/English translation provided by notarized or issuing departments;
Ø Only scanned copies of the above materials are required for application, and the original documents are required for reference at the time of registration.
Ø Uploaded supporting documents must be clear, authentic and valid. Applicants are recommended to use a professional device to scan the relevant documents. Applicants shall bear the consequences caused by untrue, unclear or unidentifiable uploaded materials.
6. APPLICATION METHODS
Step 1: Applicants should log in to the Shanghai University International Student Online Application website (https://apply.shu.edu.cn/ ) to submit their applications. After passing the application material review and online interview, applicants will receive Pre-Admission Notice from Shanghai University.
² Shanghai university online application system is expected to open on November 30, 2023. The application process includes filling in personal information, uploading application materials, and taking online test and so on. Please pay close attention to your application status within the system, and check your email regularly. Generally, applicants could receive feedback within 14 working days after submitting the application.
² This Pre-Admission Notice can be used for applying to the CSC Type A program but does not guarantee admission to Shanghai University. The final admission is subject to the approval of the dispatching authorities for overseas study of your home country, China Scholarship Council, Shanghai University, relevant College/School and prospective supervisors.
² CSC Type A program applicants do not need to pay the Shanghai University international student application fee CNY 500.
Step 2: Apply to the dispatching authorities for overseas study of your home country for CSC Type A scholarship opportunity.
Step 3: Login https://www.campuschina.org, select the study program type - Type A and complete the online application
Step 4: Reviewed by Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) and Shanghai University.
Step 5: Inquire about the admission results from the dispatching authorities for overseas study of your home country and wait to receive the official admission documents.
Ø Applicants who are not admitted to the Chinese Government Scholarship can choose to apply for other scholarship programs of Shanghai University or self-funded programs.
7. OTHERS
7.1 Scholarship applicants must submit their application materials directly to Shanghai University in person. These who apply by agencies will be disqualified from scholarship.
7.2 Scholarship recipients must complete the registration and enrollment on scheduled time in accordance with the university regulations. Those who miss the deadline without approval will be disqualified from scholarship.
7.3 Scholarship recipients must bring all original documents for registration. Provision of any false/ misleading information or failure to provide the requested supporting documents will lead to disqualification of admission.
7.4 Scholarship recipients are required to attend the annual scholarship review, which evaluates the academic performance and daily performance for the whole academic year. Those who fail to pass will lose their eligibility for the next year’s scholarship.
7.5 Scholarship recipients cannot change the major, or transfer to another University, or prolong the length of study in principle.
7.6 Those items shall be explained by the college of International Education, Shanghai University.
