ABOUT SHU
Shanghai University (SHU), is a member University of Project 211 and a leading comprehensive university co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipality. It is among Shanghai’s first pilot programs of high-level construction of local university. As a university with first-class discipline construction qualified by the Ministry of Education, SHU ranked 271st among the ARWU World University Academic Ranking in 2023, and ranked 421st globally in the 2023 US News World University Ranking, 41st in mainland China, and 5th in Shanghai.
SHU offers a wide range of disciplines, covering philosophy, economics, law, education,literature, history, natural science, engineering, medical science,management, art,multi-discipline, etc. There are a total of 11 disciplines of Shanghai University that have entered the top 1% of the world: engineering science, materials science, chemistry, computer science, environmental ecology, mathematics, social sciences, physics, clinical medicine, biology and biochemistry, economics and business.
There are more than 40,000 full-time students in Shanghai University, including 2,730 international students from more than 150 countries. Eligibility
1. To be eligible, applicants should be a citizen of a country other than the PRC and in good health both mentally and physically
Note: According to Nationality Law and the regulations of the Ministry of Education of China, applicants who have international nationality at birth, one or both parents is Chinese citizen and are applying to Shanghai University as international students must present valid passport or citizenship documents attained before April 30, 2020 and proof of renunciation of Chinese nationality, along with proof of residence abroad of at least 2 years between April 30, 2020 and April 30, 2024(9 months of residence abroad per year may be considered as one year).
Residents of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan who have emigrated to other countries and are applying to Shanghai University as international students must present valid passport or citizenship documents attained before April 30, 2020 and proof of their renunciation of Chinese nationality, along with proof of residence abroad of at least 2 years between April 30, 2020 and April 30, 2024(9 months of residence abroad per year may be considered as one year).
2. Language Proficiency
2.1 Chinese-taught programs:
HSK certificates within two years are required (HSK refers to Chinese Proficiency Test. You can find information on: www.chinesetest.cn):
HSK 4 above 180 for Chinese Language (BA), and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BA);
HSK 5 above 180 for Science, Engineering, Economics, Management and Art;
HSK 5 above 210 for Humanities.
² HSK Exemptions
The following types of applicants are exempt from taking the HSK:
ü Native speaker of Chinese;
ü The previous degree is fully taught in Chinese.
2.2 English-taught programs:
IELTS (A) 6.5 or TOEFL IBT 90 or above received within the recent two years, (TOEFL MyBestTM&TOEFL essentials Scores accepted) Other internationally recognized English proficiency tests with scores of the same level and proof of certificates is needed.
² TOEFL or IELTS Exemptions
The following types of applicants are exempt from taking the TOEFL or IELTS:
ü Native speakers of English;
ü The previous degree is fully taught in English.
Note: The three majors of Lisbon College are taught in both Chinese and English. The language requirements are HSK 5 above 180, and IELTS 5 or TOEFL 60.
3. Academic Requirement
3.1 be an academically excellent holder of high school diploma or its equivalent with GPA 3.0 or above (Note: 4-Point GPA System);
3.2 For Science and Engineering programs, applicants are qualified in mathematics and physics in high school. Some programs also require computer programming courses record;
For Economics and Management programs, applicants are qualified in mathematics in high school;
For Arts programs, applicants must have related academic background and are required to submit the portfolio (such as paintings, story scripts, short movies, etc.).
Application&Admission
1. Shanghai University Security and Background Check (SBC) for International Students
The purpose of SBC is to check whether the applicant’s personal condition is appropriate to enter the University. It includes questions about the applicant's personal background, education background and physical health. Please note that you must answer truthfully for verification, and the results will be put on record by Shanghai University.
2. University Qualification Assessment (UQA) for International Students
2.1 Only individual international applicants for degree programs are required to take UQA, which aims to evaluate whether an international student is eligible for degree programs in Shanghai University. Here is the portal for UQA: https://apply.shu.edu.cn/. Please note that you should take this test seriously, as the test results will be taken as an important consideration for admission. More information about UQA could be found in the following pie chart and samples:

1. About Interview
An interview will be arranged and conducted by the recruitment staff and professors from academic schools (e.g. Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai Film Academy) via video conferencing or telephone for shortlisted candidates who have passed SBC and UQA. The interview is expected to last for 10-15 minutes, and the language used depends on the language of instruction of your degree program.
2. Tuition Deposit Payment
All applicants of degree programs must pay the tuition deposit (One-year or half a year tuition fee) after receiving the E-admission notice within 20 working days. If the payment is not completed after 20 days, it would be regarded as giving up. For detailed deposit policies, please refer to the attached Policies on Tuition Deposit Payment for Shanghai University International Students.

þ ID photo
The passport-size photo (one-inch, 390*570) should be taken within the last six months, bareheaded, full-faced with blue-color background; the photo is required to submit as JPG image less than 100kb.
þ Information Page of Passport
Scanned copy of your valid passport with your name, photo, birth date, place of birth, date of issue, date of expiry; Visa page is required for applicants who are currently in China.
Visa page is required for applicants who are not in their home country.
þ Selfie video
Applicants should submit a video including self-introduction and study plan in China. avi, mov, or mp4 less than 50 MB are accepted. The language of the video should be consistent with the language of the program you are applying for (English or Chinese).
þ Highest Degree Certificate and Official Transcripts
Graduates-to-be should present an original or notarized scanned copy of pre-graduation certificate, and official transcripts of all courses completed by the time of application.
þ Language Proficiency Certificate
If the score sheet is not available at the time of application, applicants may upload a screen shot of your scores. But the original score sheet is required when registration.You’re highly recommended to upload color copies.
þ Statement of Financial Support

þPersonal Statement (including study plan and research proposal in China)
Written in English or Chinese (according to the teaching language of the program), including research achievements so far (e.g. title and abstracts of graduation thesis or published paper), reasons of choosing SHU, study and research plan, future career plan, etc.
þ Certificate of No Criminal Record
Note: for any applicants who can not get the Certificate of No Criminal Record at home country, please sign the No criminal record Commitment with Shanghai University.

Applicants for art majors should provide relevant artworks (painting, audios or videos).

Policies on Tuition Deposit Payment for Shanghai University
International Students (for Self-paid Students)
1. About Tuition Deposit Payment
The self-paid applicants of degree programs must pay the tuition fees deposit when receiving the receiving the E-admission notice within 20 working days. If the payment is not completed after 20 days, it would be regarded as giving up.
1.1 Payment Standard
One-year or half a year tuition fee.
1.2 Payment Method
1) For China mainland bank Card: Wechat, Alipay, APP of Agricultural Bank of China, and its online bank are recommended. More details please refer to the download area https://apply.shu.edu.cn.
2) Bank transfer: for some countries and regions which do not support the oversea payment by Alipay, the bank transfer is accepted.
The Bank account information is as below:
1.3 After payment, please log in to the application system, click "Tuition Deposit Payment", and upload the payment receipt online. After being confirmed by working staff, paper admission documents will be delivered soon.
1.4 The following types of students can be exempted from paying the tuition deposit:
a) Scholarship students (including Chinese Government Scholarship, International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, Shanghai Government Scholarship, Shanghai University Scholarship, and CCN foundation program scholarship) .
Please log in to the application system, click "Tuition Deposit Payment", and upload the screenshot of the scholarship confirmation email. After being confirmed by working staff, paper admission documents will be delivered soon.
b) Degree students recommended by partner institutions of Shanghai University.
1. Refund Policy
This information refers to applicants who have paid deposit for degree programs at Shanghai University.
1.1 The deposit is non-refundable except the circumstances outlined below.
A. Withdrawing your application within 30 days after the successful deposit payment to Shanghai University bank account.
The actual paid amount will be refunded to your Chinese bank accounts only in RMB. The service fee and the exchange rate difference will be charged.
B. University cancels programme
If the University cancels program for which the applicant has accepted an offer, then all fees paid will be refunded to the applicant’s Chinese bank accounts only in RMB.
C. Refusal of a student visa
Those who fail to get visa due to other reasons and provide the official statement of visa rejection from the embassy or consulate before the deadline of registration (11 Sep, 2024), the actual paid amount will be refunded to your Chinese bank accounts only in RMB. The service fee and the exchange rate difference will be charged.
1.2 The deposit is non-refundable in the following circumstances:
A. Withdrawing your application after 30 days after the successful deposit payment to Shanghai University bank account. The deposit will not be refunded.
B. Admitted Students but never enrolled
For any admitted students who paid tuition fee deposit, but never enrolled at Shanghai University, the deposit will not be refunded.
C. Those who fail to apply visa due to personal reasons, the deposit will not be refunded;
D. Current Students who transfer out or withdraw
The current students who apply for university transfer or withdrawal after registration will not be refunded.
2. Refund Procedures
2.1 For applicants who meet the Refund Policies listed above
Fill in the refund application form (refer to the template), and then submit to International Students Admissions Office with the following:
þ Copy of passport
þ Copy of Chinese Bank account information
þ Copy of Opening Bank information
þ Copy of Payment receipt
þ Others (visa rejection statement from the embassy or consulate etc.)
Please note that it take at least 90 working days to deal with the refund process.
